Chevron Design Challenge
Freshman Engineering students Tiffany Fierros, Lily Saunier, and Andre Zendejas were selected from their peers to represent Upland High School in the annual Project Lead the Way Chevron Design Challenge at Hawthorne High School. In one day, the students were given a “Design Challenge” in which they had to brainstorm, design, and present a commercial product. They also had to create a 3D model of the product using Autodesk Inventor software and prepare manufacturing drawings. All of this was done in the span of a few hours. The competition culminated with the students presenting their designs to a group of professional engineers in a style similar to the “Shark Tank” TV show. Fifteen teams representing high school engineering pathways were present. While Team Highlander did not place in the top three, they did an amazing job working together under pressure. Tiffany, Lili, and Andre are members of the Academy of Engineering and Architecture pathway here at Upland High School.

Senior CSF Members:

Graduation is looming, and some students need their final semester grades to earn CSF honors.

If you are able to earn the 100% membership awards (6 semesters, sophomore through senior years), you MUST qualify for your last semester of your senior year in order to qualify for 100% membership.  I will need you to fill out the Google Form and have it submitted by MAY 19 AT 7:45 AM in order for me to calculate your final semester membership.  The good news is you have ALREADY qualified for LIFE membership! J

If you have qualified for Life already(4 semesters sophomore through senior years), but cannot qualify for 100%, there is nothing further that you need to do.

If you are waiting on your LAST semester to qualify for Life membership (4 semesters sophomore through senior years), you will also need to fill out a Google Form and submit it to me by MAY 19TH, AT 7:45 AM

Cut and paste the link into your browser and fill out completely.

Students at MADD Display
Upland PD in conjunction with the MADD organization, worked with our ASB Director, Judy Wilson to provide an assembly for our students to help raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving. There was also on display in the quad, a car that had been involved in an accident. Students were able to interact with UPD officers during lunch to get information about the campaign against drunk driving and how to make responsible decisions.

Robotics teamRoboticsStudents from across the US have six weeks to design, fabricate, and test a robot that does very specific tasks.  This year, the robot had to collect giant wiffle balls and throw them into a hoop 10 feet above the ground, collect giant gears and deliver them to a collection station, and at the end of each round the robot had to lift itself up off the ground 4 feet by climbing a rope.  Not an easy task, but one that was accepted by an incredible group of students at UHS.  I am proud to have coached this group of students and even more proud of how well they did at their regional competition.

SATURDAY SCHOOL:

Saturday School is conducted almost every Saturday for the purpose of making up unexcused absences, ditching, tardies and for violating minor school infractions. This method is provided as an alternative to suspension. Limits may be imposed on the number of times a student is assigned. The class is conducted from 8:00–12:00. Students must report to the front of the library (unless otherwise indicated) before 8:00 a.m., or they may not be admitted. After meeting at the library, students are escorted to a classroom for the day or remain in the library (depending on space availability). Students who do not have any work with them to complete will utilize our APEX learning tutorial module. Apex is designed to assist students in strengthening their skills in subject areas such as Math, English, Science and History. There is a pre and post test to demonstrate that the student has mastered the subject area and also be proof of positive attendance. Disruptive students will be asked to leave and will not receive credit for attendance. Failure to show for an assigned Saturday School indicates the student has opted to receive a day of suspension, which may be assigned as an in-school suspension (ISS) or an at-home suspension. Students are not allowed to leave the building during the break. Breakfast is usually served between 0930-1000 in the cafeteria.

All students are responsible for keeping track of their Saturday School assignments; however the Discipline Office will post them on your school loop on a recurring basis. If you are still unsure, please feel free to e-mail- Colleen Rodriguez at Colleen_Rodriguez@upland.k12.ca.us.
